Vanilla Air – R Tools

Dear Readers,

A fantastic update of Vanilla Air last week, R-Tools ! (thanks again Kevin !)

R-Tools is a first set of 6 functions/wizard to generate R code, with focus on recoding dataset :

  1. Date to Age Conversion : Switch a date to a number (age) … when you have a birthdate, you will get a number
  2. Age to Range conversion : From a number (age), create new classes (age range) … from a number, build a range
  3. New classification Group : Create new level in a dimension … for example : when you have country column and want a continent column
  4. New Calculated Column : Apply a calcul on a column … take an object, and apply a formula on it
  5. Filter Column : Filter your dataset … it will gives you a new dataset, filtered using your own filter
  6. Recode Column : Modify a column value, useful to correct wrong information in your dataset

We will continue to add new wizard for R code generation, to help the masses to develop their own R program. There are so many areas to create Wizard interface : to create package (data package, function package), to embed geovisualization “in one click”, to help user to analyze their datasets or create their Markdown documents, etc ….

Technical note : those functions take benefit of 3 R packages : eeptools, dplyr and plyr

… some companies are building softwares – like we do – other are writing vaporware roadmap in powerpoint … just chose the right platform !

Vanilla Air support from Vanilla Portal

Dear Reader,

Vanilla BI portal gets momentum, powered by Vanilla Air ! With version 5.2, we have finalized support of Vanilla Air Analysis (aka : Markdown documents) with Vanilla portal. This covers not only reports (that can be used to share official analysis that combines explanation and result of analysis), but also interactive dashboard. A must !

For Reports, you can have parameters like number (for a number of cluster) but also character (to change the clustering algorithm, for example)

For Dashboard, you can manage easily different statistical graphs and even combine analysis and map

Note : as usual, all those documents can be saved in our document repository, being indexed and accessible through the document management interface or through the search interface.

Note 2 : all those examples are available, those are samples we deployed with the Vanilla 5.2 server you can download from our Website

Vanilla 5.2 – Server Update

Dear Readers,

Another key feature with Vanilla 5.2 : Automatic Server Update process. If Vanilla administrators enable this feature (it’s a parameter in vanilla.property file), they will get alert when new patchs are available (on top right of the interface, with indication of the number of patchs available), and they can process to patchs download and installation. As easy as in any programs you run on your laptop 🙂

Objective is to make your life easy, to avoid new installation just for some new patchs and to secure your sever upgrade through an automatic process

Vanilla 5.2 – Centralized Maps

Dear Readers,

Years ago with Vanilla 4, we introduced Maps inside our Bi documents, because we do believe a map is worth hundred of reports. First integration was inside Dashboard, then inside cube, using geo-dimension definition.

Maps support has grown continuously, sometimes with new maps format integration (using our ETL, support for shape file, and recently support for gtfs file), sometimes with new supported technology and framework (after GoogleMaps, we added in Vanilla 5 support for OpenStreetMaps), somtimes with new modules : Vanilla 5 comes with a refreshed Kpi module, that contains maps to display Kpi.

Unfortunatly, Maps definition was everywhere, especially inside every Dashboard. So, with Vanilla 5.2, we have changed this approach and created an interface to define maps, to be used everywhere : in report, dashboard, cube and kpi. Again, we can do it because Vanilla is not a bundle of different modules grabbed on internet : we know our code, we know how API.

As a good news never comes alone, we have also developed a specific interface to manipulate Maps & Kpi. Its part of Vanilla 5.2, and soon the subject of another post 🙂

Vanilla 5.2 – Introduction to WebMeta

Dear Readers,

Many times, after installation of a Vanilla server, users “want to see” : so, they can run the default reports available with the platform. But when it comes to view the result using their own data, the step is sometimes a little too high to get it : they need to install Vanilla Metadata Studio, sometimes fix a JVM issue or JAVA_HOME issue, then develop a Metadata on their database, publish it on the server, etc … it’s not complicated, but clearly : without assistance, it may takes some times.

With Vanilla 5.2, we provide a new module WebMeta, to solve this burden. WebMeta allows developers and early adopters to create their own Vanilla Metadata using a simple Web interface.

Vanilla WebMeta

WebMeta doesn’t replace Vanilla Metadata studio, but is more for database connection testing purpose, usually after a first Vanilla installation, when developer want to  browse their own data without delay, and they have no time and no knowledge to install and run Vanilla Metadata

Data Source can be of any kind : database, Hadoop nosql database, text file, Web Services or Excel file can be source of data for the platform

I created a simple video (1 mn) to introduce WebMeta

Vanilla Air Presentation

I will present the Vanilla Air platform – the Analytics module available in Vanilla that runs R models – at Lyon R Meetup event on march 18th 2016.

During this session, I will introduce some of the news features of Vanilla Air such as Dataset exploration and visualization, integration within Vanilla, dynamic markdown development and social media datasource integration

Vanilla 5 is officially available !

Dear Reader,

Vanilla v5 is available … finally ! … well, with “some delay”, we have to admit … but result is awesome !

Still some subjects to fix on our WebSite, like the server is more 1Gb, so our drupal Website is not happy … we put the archive on ftp account … but we kept our promise : version 5, LTS version, will meet your expectation in terms of features, reliability, cost effective, performance and scalability !

I was in KL last week to conduct a training with very nice people … its amazing to see Version 5 ran during the full week like a charm, and learning curve is very good for trainees.

Below some of the version 5 new features :

  • Vanilla Portal : OpenStreet Maps support for any documents, multi documents aggregation, document sharing using AklaBox, export Dashboard to PDF or Word format
  • Vanilla Metadata Explorer : users can now explore their metadata model from portal, aggregate it, turn it into cube and run data mining analysis on it
  • Vanilla Kpi update : using our experience on KPI projects, we have redesign Vanilla Kpi to meet latests standard and user requirements when it comes to deploy BSC or KPI projects.
  • New AddIns Excel components to access and run your cubes, reports or Kpi from your Excel interface
  • Big Data support. Vanilla has been certified on Hadoop (Cloudera & HortonWorks) and certified on Spark (Databricks)
  • BIRT 4.3 & 4.5 support, report designer and report engine,
  • Update to Solr5  with latest support of Solr5 advanced functions
  • R integration and support, to run predictive and analytics models on top of Bi data model
  • Lot of new features for Vanilla Viewer, Metadata, Dashboard and Olap Designer
  • Review of platform component : optimization of BI core and the ETL core for monitoring, clustering and scalability

Have Fun !
