Vanilla 52 – Now

Dear Readers,

Vanilla 5.2 is available today, Easter Monday, with major new features such as WebMetadata Interface, Vanilla Air – our Analytics component – integration and a refreshed Kpi & Maps interface with central Maps management

  • WebMetadata should make it easy for anybody to start with Vanilla : no need anymore to install the Metadata development studio to start connecting your own database. Once server is installed, you can build your own analysis – developer or power user – using only your Web browser (including Analytics)
  • Vanilla Air – our Analytics platform – is now part of Vanilla 5.2. What a change in the game ! Vanilla Air is a browser-based R development studio with advances features to develop interactive Markdown document. Full integration : those documents can be published and indexed inside the Vanilla portal
  • Kpi & Maps together, powered by Vanilla Kpi database, is also a crazy new feature as anybody need maps to visualize its Kpi, and we provide now more, with kpi calculation on the maps (difference, evolution, comparison). Best of the bread : all the maps available in any Vanilla interface (Dashboard, Report, Cube, Kpi Maps) are now managed from a single Web interface,

Vanilla 5.2 – Server Update

Dear Readers,

Another key feature with Vanilla 5.2 : Automatic Server Update process. If Vanilla administrators enable this feature (it’s a parameter in vanilla.property file), they will get alert when new patchs are available (on top right of the interface, with indication of the number of patchs available), and they can process to patchs download and installation. As easy as in any programs you run on your laptop 🙂

Objective is to make your life easy, to avoid new installation just for some new patchs and to secure your sever upgrade through an automatic process

Have Fun !

Vanilla 5.2 – Centralized Maps

Dear Readers,

Years ago with Vanilla 4, we introduced Maps inside our Bi documents, because we do believe a map is worth hundred of reports. First integration was inside Dashboard, then inside cube, using geo-dimension definition.

Maps support has grown continuously, sometimes with new maps format integration (using our ETL, support for shape file, and recently support for gtfs file), sometimes with new supported technology and framework (after GoogleMaps, we added in Vanilla 5 support for OpenStreetMaps), somtimes with new modules : Vanilla 5 comes with a refreshed Kpi module, that contains maps to display Kpi.

Unfortunatly, Maps definition was everywhere, especially inside every Dashboard. So, with Vanilla 5.2, we have changed this approach and created an interface to define maps, to be used everywhere : in report, dashboard, cube and kpi. Again, we can do it because Vanilla is not a bundle of different modules grabbed on internet : we know our code, we know how API.

As a good news never comes alone, we have also developed a specific interface to manipulate Maps & Kpi. Its part of Vanilla 5.2, and soon the subject of another post 🙂

Have Fun !

Vanilla 5.2 – Introduction to WebMeta

Dear Readers,

Many times, after installation of a Vanilla server, users “want to see” : so, they can run the default reports available with the platform. But when it comes to view the result using their own data, the step is sometimes a little too high to get it : they need to install Vanilla Metadata Studio, sometimes fix a JVM issue or JAVA_HOME issue, then develop a Metadata on their database, publish it on the server, etc … it’s not complicated, but clearly : without assistance, it may takes some times.

With Vanilla 5.2, we provide a new module WebMeta, to solve this burden. WebMeta allows developers and early adopters to create their own Vanilla Metadata using a simple Web interface.

Vanilla WebMeta

Vanilla WebMeta

WebMeta doesn’t replace Vanilla Metadata studio, but is more for database connection testing purpose, usually after a first Vanilla installation, when developer want to  browse their own data without delay, and they have no time and no knowledge to install and run Vanilla Metadata

Data Source can be of any kind : database, Hadoop nosql database, text file, Web Services or Excel file can be source of data for the platform

I created a simple video (1 mn) to introduce WebMeta

Vanilla 5.2 – Air integration

Dear Reader,

Integration of Vanilla Air inside Vanilla BI opens the door to new kind of application and simplifies the approach when it comes to start Analytical subjects. Providing more than Olap/Analysis and giving the control back to users to run their own models are just some of the initial features anybody can now envision.

Vanilla Air itself provided already a lot : running R engine, markdown integration to create custom analytical documents, enterprise deployment, package management, workflow, etc … seamless integration put now more on the table : Metadata support as datasource, Vanilla Analysis has default cube browser and best of the bread : dynamic markdown documents available inside Vanilla viewer.

Its very difficult to explain in a few lines the interest of markdown, so its even more difficult to explain the impact of markdown integration with Vanilla. To keep it simple, Markdown allows designer to create interactive documents that combine user explanation and R visualization. I created a simple video (1 mn) to present Vanilla + Vanilla Air (using Markdown) integration : Vanilla 52 Air integration

Vanilla 5.2 Announcement

Dear Readers,

Vanilla 5.2 will be soon available, mid march (so, its in 2 weeks from now) with a set of new features that could make it a version 6, just read :

  • Vanilla Air is now integrated as a module inside Vanilla, making our Analytics engine available natively inside the BI and ETL stacks. Awesome ! we have done a clean, useful and consistent integration, its not a combination of different vendors software to have “Analytics + Visualization” in a bundle.
  • WebMeta is our new Web interface to create Metadata documents using just a browser. For immediate usage after platform installation ! This module allows designers to create Metadata on their own database without having to install anymore our java studio. Ideal at early stage of platform discovery.
  • Vanilla Viewer can now run interactive Vanilla Air document, giving the power to end user to setup and run their own Statistical analysis and predictive models from Vanilla portal.
  • Server update management : admin can now use an update mechanism to take benefit of the future patch we will publish on a centralized server. Its again a feature that will make your life easier.
  • Many New Features such as a centralized Maps manager, ETL consistency box, Workflow to process Air and R models, Olap Date calculation, KpiMaps calculcation, support for OData datasets, continuous support for latest Hadoop stacks, etc …

Keep connected ! We believe Vanilla 5.2, especially with its seamless integration of Analytics and New WebMeta interface, will help you to develop and deploy your BI  application even faster than today, with more features inside !

Have Fun !
