I can react to this post, which is really surprising from someone from Gartner. I read quickly your post : do you really believe what you wrote ? Well, everyone knows that Gartner missed the "big crunch" and was an advocate of commercial BI (see the URL to decideo)

Now, I'm 100% certain we are leaving in different worlds,

Thanks Yves !

2 french Open Source promoters talking in english, trying to break an incredible silence ...

You are right, Gartner draw a new category just for some US Open Source BI newcomers, it was a funny addon, but each company used it to promote its position.

Beeing in MQ is not a business objective, it can help, but the price to pay is too expensive by now. Just keep in mind the time required by Sunopsis to finally enter the MQ ... and Qliktech is now an American based company (not a Sweden one anymore ... I may be wrong ?)

We can discuss a long time about analyst moving criteria : they are what they are. Problem is that they may not be align with the current market situation, and they changed without notice to arrange a marketing & commercial position

On how to be listing in an Analysis, we definitly don't share the same vision ... and vision is sometimes related to experience.

Regards,
Patrick

Patrick, congratulations on the launch!
However I disagree with your point regarding the analysts. Yes, some analyst firms will ask openly for money to cover your firm, but these are not the ones that get visibility. And no, Jaspersoft and Pentaho did not enter the BI MQ after one year of being on the market. They "almost made it but not quite so" - a new category "on the egde of" the quadrant I guess!
You don't need to be a US company to get visibility with the analyst firms (I think I proved this point at Sunopsis, Qliktech is another example). But you need to be deployed globally, and to have enough traction. And of course, to meet their criteria (this is where I have a problem with them, as stated in my post that you reference above).
Best,

Yves

Hello Emilio,

We welcome everyone aboard ! Especially System Integrators willing to deploy true Open Source BI Platform instead of Stone Age First Generation BI Platform.

You are just on time : Vanilla is getting fast & strong adoption from companies willing to deploy scalable Internet BI applications that meet developer and user's requierement in terms of quality of interface, features & management tools,

I agree, Open Source licence type is not an issue, if you have a look at Actuate survey, this is even not a subject listed anymore !

This raise the question "how to evaluate the value of Open Source company", especially if some companies (not only in BI area) have raised so much money that the target price is not raisonable.

Situation is the same in France : customers take the community edition for eveything : database, application server, Vanilla, we just explain to those users that they won't have access to support, they won't be involved in roadmap, ... but they still have access to our Enterprise Services package.

What we're seeing is more and more customers willing to deploy the community rather than subscription editions of the open source BI platforms. Several years ago, they were terrified of GPL. Not any more, it seems.

When we engage with such customers, we very carefully review the risks inherent in community edition deployment. Some companies are ok these risks, having worked through the issues with legal. Maybe it's the economy at play as well.
